Software asset management (SAM) without the enterprise overhead

Software asset management (SAM) is the practice of tracking the software an organisation has bought against the software it actually has installed and in use. LicenseSphere 360 is a lightweight SAM tool for teams that want that visibility without a long implementation project.

The three questions SAM has to answer

Whatever tool or process you use, software asset management comes down to three questions. What did we buy (entitlements)? What is installed or assigned (deployment)? And is the gap between the two costing us money or creating risk?

LicenseSphere 360 maps to each of these. Entitlements live in the license and seat inventory. Deployment comes from the endpoint agent and from seat allocations. The comparison between them is something you can review in the dashboards and in the seat and installed-software views.

Entitlements: the license record

Each license record holds the vendor, the number of seats, cost and renewal date, together with purchase order and contract reference fields so that finance and procurement can find the paperwork. Seats are allocated to unique users or to devices, and every reclaim is written to an audit trail.

Deployment: what is installed

The endpoint agent runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and reports the installed-software list (name, version, publisher and install date) plus hostname, operating system, architecture and agent version. By default it checks in hourly; an administrator can change that. The agent key is tenant-scoped, stored hashed and revocable.

The agent is deliberately narrow. It does not collect process activity, launch or last-run times, executable paths, file contents, keystrokes or browsing activity. If you need usage metering of that kind, this tool does not do it, and we would rather say so up front.

Beyond a spreadsheet, short of a platform

  • Directory connections to Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra, run on demand, flag seats idle after 45 days without a sign-in.
  • Renewal alerts at 30 and 60 days and when expired, in the app and optionally through Slack or Microsoft Teams webhooks.
  • Dashboards, CSV export of licenses and of the audit trail, and fixed roles for IT admin, procurement, auditor and employee.
  • Email support. No professional-services engagement is needed to get started.

Limits to know about

LicenseSphere 360 is not a full enterprise SAM suite. It does not hold third-party certifications, and it does not automatically calculate vendor-specific licensing metrics. It gives you the records and comparisons to do that review yourself or with your advisers. For related topics see license compliance audit preparation and IT asset management software.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from an IT asset management (ITAM) tool?

ITAM usually covers hardware as well as software. LicenseSphere 360 focuses on software licenses and seats, and counts an endpoint as a managed unit when it reports installed software. See the IT asset management software page.

Which operating systems does the agent support?

Windows, macOS and Linux.
